2020 Releases Recap

2020 was a weird year. We feel lucky that we still exist. We have always been driven solely by the motivation of sharing experiences and music, rather than involving money in the label. This year, we were happy to have made that choice when we started the label. Although the experiences (hosting and booking shows, getting togethers with friends and scene members, meeting new people) were put on hold, we were still able to put out new music like before. But we feel very bad for all those people that lost their jobs, lost their ability to do what they do good, venues closing, people getting depressed. Losing money is one thing, and losing the experience of sharing live music on top of that is just plain awful.

In this post, we’d like to focus on the six releases we put out this year. Quite a few of them would have sold better if they were promoted with tours. So if you want to support these musicians to earn back their pressing costs, head on over to our Bandcamp page and spend whatever money you can spare. All proceeds will go to the artists, as always. Journalists and influencers, these are all records you can put in your year-end lists. It would help us spread the word!

Microplaza – We’ll Never Fit In This Poem Together
Great 2nd installment of the project by Arno (music) and Benjamin (words). Dark, intense, flawless indie miniatures. Sold out 7″, sorry kids.

Combo Qazam – Flight Music
Debut album by Utrecht veterans where guitars and rhythms blend together into an exciting mix of post-punk, math, noise, kraut and 90s indie rock.

Karl Blau & The World of Dust – Blue Herons
Split 7″ with local lo-fi goodness. Very special to have Karl Blau in the roster this way. Beautiful release.

Sleepies – Time v Pleasure
This was one of our favorite releases when it came out (digitally), so we decided to honor it with a physical cassette release. The best NY post-punk you’ll hear this year.

LOGOUT – ΕΔΩ/ΕΚΕΙ
Greek psych masterpiece. Melancholy like Sigur Rós, but way more intimate. This is a must-have.

Moonchy & Tobias – Moonchy & Tobias III
Third record by Todd Tobias & Pat Moonchy, very dark, and way out there. It’s like a nightmare seen through MDMA eyes. Love it.

Stay safe, enjoy the music!

Moonchy & Tobias III out now on cd / digital!

Today we release Moonchy & Tobias III into the world, the sublime third collaborative album of vocalist Pat Moonchy (Sothiac) and multi-instrumentalist/producer Todd Tobias (GBV, Robert Pollard) under the Moonchy & Tobias banner.

Get the CD now here:

The album is available now on CD and in digital formats via Bandcamp, streaming via Spotify and is available to download or stream at most online stores.

“Musically you have references such as Mi And L’Au, The Caretaker, Cranes, Dead Can Dance and Portishead , although they never quite cover what this pair brings here. In conclusion, you can safely say that you are certainly not dealing with an average combo. What a great, versatile and mesmerizing album!” – De Subjectivisten

LOGOUT – ΕΔΩ/EKEI

Happy release day to ΕΔΩ/EKEI, the new ‘retrofutural masterpiece’ by Greek artist LOGOUT. According to the press, this ‘lovely pop record’ is ‘one of the best psych-pop albums ever released by a Greek artist’. Being sung entirely in his native language Greek, this serves as a gateway to the country’s thriving underground scene.

The album has one foot in the Netherlands and the other one in the country where LOGOUT was born, and it’s a special listen. Dreamy, layered, lo-fi, psychedelic and as always with great melodies and a melancholy vibe throughout. Definitely one of the best albums we heard this year, so we are thrilled to put it out on our label.

ΕΔΩ/EKEI is out today on LP and digital via Tiny Room Records in The Netherlands and B-otherSide Records in Greece. Get your copy in our Bandcamp store:

Sleepies – Time v Pleasure

Out now: Sleepies – Time v Pleasure (cassette)

The beginning of 2020 saw the digital release of an album that got us excited about rock music again. Time v Pleasure by Sleepies was preceded by the first single Roman Road, which pushed all the right buttons. Drum machines, piercing guitars, and a vocal effect that brings late era Wire to mind. We listened to this track on repeat. At the time of the full album digital release in February, we were finishing up the debut album by Utrecht band Combo Qazam. Time v Pleasure almost felt like a sister album to that, leaning heavier on the post-punk side but with the same experimental, kraut-influenced indie rock throughout a diverse, entertaining ride. From the bouncy punk tune Ancient Dirt to the goth-induced ending track Eels Reversed – this album has got it all. We decided to honor this excitement with a first time physical release: Time v Pleasure is released on cassette (limited edition of 25 copies, with an exclusive bonus track) on September 29, 2020 by Tiny Room Records. Sleepies will get you excited about rock again too.

LOGOUT – Παράθυρα (new single from forthcoming album ΕΔΩ/ΕΚΕΙ)

We proudly present the new single by Amsterdam-based Athenian songwriter and producer LOGOUT! Παράθυρα is the first taste of the forthcoming album ΕΔΩ/ΕΚΕΙ, to be released on October 16, 2020.

ΕΔΩ/ΕΚΕΙ is completely written in LOGOUT’s native language, Greek. Παράθυρα (Windows) promises a more nostalgic, acoustic approach, without losing LOGOUT’s ability to write catchy folk melodies and experiment with sound. The 12″ LP will be released on October 16 by Tiny Room Records in collaboration with B-otherSide Records.

New addition to the roster: Geri van Essen

Happy announcement: we welcome Geri van Essen to the Tiny Room family! This London-based Dutch songwriter makes amazing, timeless folk songs that appeal to the imagination. We are currently working together on her new album, that will come out on Tiny Room Records later this year. Now, to tickle the hype and let the announcement not be a hollow one, we present to you first single 23/32!

23/32 was written in one sitting, hummed into Van Essens phone in the staircase of her office, late summer 2019. It’s mostly a general observation of people struggling to feel content, playing with the notion of past and future from different perspectives.

Split 7″ by The World of Dust and Karl Blau “Blue Herons” out June 5, 2020!

Glad to finally announce this: we are putting out a split 7″ record of The World of Dust with Karl Blau! How amazing is that… The joint effort is called Blue Herons, will come out on June 5, 2020 and both artists contributed with songs about the places they live or lived. There are only 200 copies available. Pre-orders are up now in our Bandcamp store.

Karl’s side of the wax is a cover of Pounding Serfs (an 80s K Records band), which became the theme song for Anacortes, Washington State, USA. The lovely, seaside village of Anacortes was Blau’s home for 25 years, until his recent move to Philadelphia.

In The Life of Gods, Stefan from The World of Dust describes the move his family made four years ago from Hoograven, Utrecht, The Netherlands to the nearby village Bilthoven.

Combo Qazam – Flight Music (out May 20, 2020)

The debut album by Dutch post-punk band Combo Qazam is called ‘Flight Music’ and will be released by Tiny Room Records on May 20, 2020. The ten songs shift from math rock guitars to kraut rhythms, while maintaining a dense and intense mid-fi indie sound that fans of experimental rock such as Wire, Battles, Beak>, Pinback and Tortoise will enjoy.

All tour dates before summer have been postponed because of the coronavirus situation, but we still wanted to get this album out there on the planned release date. We worked hard on it and are proud of it. A lot of bands are postponing their releases, but we figured you people need more weird guitar rock to flee from reality. ‘Flight Music’ provides this escape. Stay tuned for pre-orders. In the meantime, listen to the singles Ions and Owls on Spotify. The amazing cover art was made by James O’Malley from Cleveland, Ohio.

Tracklisting:

  1. Ions
  2. Owls
  3. Movements
  4. Logorrhea
  5. Panama
  6. Waveforms
  7. Marx
